In the process of writing my 2011 Year in Review - all the amazing photo-sessions I had the pleasure to be apart of from family photography, boudoir, engagement & weddings this past weekend started the first snowfall of 2012. And then distraction settled in.

"Let's go, Verlon - Let's go play in the snow or go take pictures! Feels like it's been forever since we've taken any pictures of us!" (I think what lured him in was pouty eyes from 5'4 me looking up to 6'1 him -- yes I really do "look up to him").

Lucky for me, today was a snow day for Verlon - he works outdoors and in this type of weather it's unsafe. So today was a snow day. We started the day off at our favourite coffee shop for breakfast while watching the flurries come down - Dayne had a snow day too so he joined us for breaky. After the yummy mocha, and wraps it was off to the park.

With a tripod and my camera I was determined to get some photographs of us in the same way I would photograph any of my clients (in future I'm hiring someone, even if it's incredibly short notice for a snow day in future - running back and forth to a timer is EXTREMELY tiring). I'd eye the composition with Verlon in it and then move the tripod accordingly with my 5D mii & 50mm F1.2 ready to go for photographs of the two of us together. What the timer missed was me throwing snowballs at Verlon and him replying back "the camera is saving you right now from a snowball" - what can I say, true love -- right?

Verlon is really awesome at photographing, he has a great eye. Today I was feeling up to the challenge as he said "your turn". Usually the only thing I can bust out awkwardly is hip-hop rapper signage with my fingers. Today, I wasn't allowed. This whole day only made me more excited to hire on a pro for a session so that when I was hugging in close to Ver, I wouldn't have to wonder if I pressed the timer hard enough or when it's going to go off. This spring I'm going to book a session asap! Even though Verlon is a pro & took really great pictures of me - which was so different, I like being behind the camera!! It made me so happy to see photograph's of us together. At this point I couldn't imagine not taking photo's every year for every season. heh.

I'm really lucky that Verlon has an amazing eye too - thanks funny for the great pics of me :)

After the photographs there was an afternoon with cuddles on the couch (I may be cuddling and writing this on my laptop - yay for working from home) and episodes of Top Gear U.K. -- thank you Netflix. I love Snow Days because there's really no reason to leave your home, or do anything else but be with each other. Hope all you lower mainlander's are enjoying your snow day too!

Merry Christmas! Vancouver Wedding Photographer

I hope all of you are enjoying your time with your families and celebrating your Holiday traditions. Over on this end Verlon and I with friends have been watching all the Christmas movies, decorating, putting lights up, wrapping our gifts and we even baked gingerbread cookies.

Christmas gives off a feeling like no other. It brings people together and fills the heart with a sense that is so hard to put into words. Family means more during this time than any other time of the year. And I feel the need to be around the ones I love more than ever.

Tonight I'm going to be with my siblings, and parents on the island and we'll enjoy our dinner tonight, church at midnight and then sit around and open gifts after church in the night. I'm so excited for my little niece to open her gifts and play in the boxes & bags.

Enjoy this time of year, cherish this time with loved ones, and make some great memories :)

It was the big day on Wednesday -- the day that I thought everything would change. I thought a big dream would come true. It was the BC Wedding Awards. The whole day was rather anxious and I just wanted to get it over with from the morning time. I had a good friend of mine Rikki come over and we visited then got ready for the awards. Dayne and Verlon later joined us for some take out *yum sushi* just what I wanted, okay and some tempura - hope my PT isn't reading this ;) Telsea. It was an awesome day, had a girly morning - heck I even got my nails done. If you know me at all, my nails never get further than filed or cut. Somehow paint isn't attracted to them. When Verlon got home from work he brought home a dozen roses to pre-congratulate me that I already had won so much. This year was my busiest year to date and there was so many amazing weddings.

On Facebook there was loads of supportive comments - thanks Fatima :) which really had me convinced tonight was THE night. Well, unfortunately it wasn't. Maybe next year. The event itself was a lot of fun. There was a red carpet, with a celebrity back drop for photographs, H'orderves to try and I had wine. Everyone was dolled up in their own glamourous personal style. The Wedding Belles hosted the evening adding bits of laughter in-between each award. Lucky for me, I had run into Maclean & Erin from Hello Tomorrow Productions - best videography <--- check them out.... product placement alert.... do it.

We sat and waited to hear our names be potentially called up. Unfortunately it didn't happen. And not gonna lie, it sucked. The winners were amazing, the photographs were unreal. How did I simply think I could win? When you want something so badly and it doesn't happen that's when you have to watch out for the FUNK. And it hit, at 10:49pm the funk hit me. The white flag was raised, and was ready to throw in the towel. My next mission was an ice cream sundae... from McDonalds.... with fudge. And it was not as amazing as I thought it would be. When I got home, put on my PJ's and sat on the couch thinking -- wow, so this is what it feels like. I still have the photographs I submitted on the wall. I was thinking maybe the law of attraction would make it happen. And went to bed.

I woke up the next morning still infected with this nasty infection called "The Funk". That feeling of mopey, moody, blah feeling. Pulled myself together put on my gym clothes and proceeded to not go to the gym but shopping. I said to myself "a quick little trip won't hurt before I try to go to the gym". Ended up at a store picking up little things for Christmas for my niece Aliza. Little Roxy hoodies, booties etc and smiles came to my face getting excited for Christmas. I love that little girl so much and was she ever changing my day. Thinking about how she's just started walking and tumbling around - was so excited for my next trip back to the island to see her at Christmas. The highlight of the shopping was finding a little tee that said "Awesome, is how I roll" and it hit me. The not funked out Ashley would be saying "better luck next year, anyway Awesome is how I roll and I'd throw up some sort of whud'up sign" (see photos below, head bows in shame). Immediately thanks to a toddler's t-shirty by Roxy I proceeded to the gym to do my works out and I left feeling 110% better. I didn't turn on the iPod to listen to music I just had a conversation with myself and went over all the things I had achieved this year and why was winning just 1 award more important than the journey I've been on. Why did I feel like I had to just "check out" because I didn't win?

I am living my dream. I don't think any award is bigger than that. I wake up every morning and work on projects, shoots, and photographs that I am so incredibly passionate about. And I am so very lucky to have some amazing people to give me that shift kick in the a$$ when I need it or a refresher on how privilege I already am. The biggest thanks is necessary to all my clients that make it possible. Without you I'd be an empty shell - Thank you for helping me keep my dream going. This year was huge in that I was published in Print earlier this year in Real Weddings Vancouver - it was 4 pages! That's a HUGE deal! I've been published online 6+ times and so much more. I lost sight of the journey and I needed to recalibrate. I thought back to an article I read by an awesome Photog - Chase Jarvis. Get Used to Hearing "NO"

In the article he writes:

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't quit on YOUR dreams. I'm living mine. With the support of amazing people around me who believe in me. You can do the same. When I felt like I needed to throw in the towel, what I really needed was a momentary breather, refocus and listen to those who care around me. I couldn't imagine doing anything else but this. So why shouldn't you follow your dreams too?

Kayden's First Photo-Shoot - Langley BC, Newborn Photography

Kayden was just a little one this summer when I had the chance to photograph him and his big sister Celina. You may have recognized these two as their parent's Lydia & Daryl are related to my October bride Rebecca! Celina was a flower girl in the wedding.

Ricardo & Nicolette, Cancun Palace - Mexico Destination Wedding

I have never been so nervous for a wedding like I was for my older brother Ricardo's wedding to Nicolette aka Rico & Nicky, and if you aren't familiar with my family they have a little one... a little Yorkie named "Niko" a mix of Rico & Nicky.

The group left from Victoria and headed to beautiful sunny Cancun for the wedding. We stayed at the beautiful luxe resort of Cancun Palace. I'm not sure if it was just the whole adventure of travelling to the wedding or the fact the pressure was on for their wedding -- but it was definitely a rush. We were very tight on time of the day of which added to the pressure.

When I was younger I was constantly under Ric's feet. I would follow him and his friends (i'm sure they remember that vividly). If anyone was going to hang out at Ric's and well, play video games - I was always wanting to play too. Usually I was the 4th player in Mario Kart or Soul Calibur. Yes, little video game geek here! In someways I think I was pretty much raised by my two older brothers Marco & Rico -- hockey and video games was the norm.

When I saw Ric & Nicky after their return trip from Disney Land last New Year's and they said they were engaged -- I thought it's about time! After 5+ years, I was waiting for the day for Nicky to become my sister in law. On the day of, when it really sunk it that they were meant to be was when I saw Ric tear up as Nicky walked down the isle. I have never seen my brother tear up, this moment was so big. After the big wedding celebrations Ric & Nicky decided the evening wasn't done, so we all went up to our rooms to change and go for a walk on the beach at night. Lucky for us, we witnessed 3 - 4 momma Turtles laying eggs on the beach. It was so unbelievable to watch these massive Sea Turtles coming up only at night to lay their eggs. There were conservation officers on the beach to make sure no tourists disturbed them and no photography was allowed as the flash is unnatural and scares them.

Destination Weddings are a completely different experience. Close friends and family travel with you for one of the biggest moments of your life. It's a whole week of celebration and visiting with those people close to you -- I think I love that aspect the most. I live in Langley while my whole family lives in Victoria and although they are close, I don't get to see them as much as I'd like. Spending time with my whole family everyday for a week was such an amazing time -- I wish our family would travel more together. The reason why this Cancun trip meant so much to me is life is precious, and we can't always make time for each other during everyday busy life. While we were in Cancun, there was no work, no other priorities just quality time and a time to celebrate Ric & Nicky getting married.

I'm so very happy for my brother Ric and his new wife Nicky. Welcome to the family Nicky!

Brianne and Peter in Vancouver Engagement Photography

Earlier this year when Brianne contacted me to announce her engagement and set up a consultation I was very excited that for one thing she chose me, but also because we went to high school together! After having our first consultation and meeting her Prince Charming a.k.a. Peter -- I knew I wanted to be apart of their big day in Victoria.

Brianne and Peter placed an importance on unique and different photographs then what most people know as typical wedding photography. For their engagement session they decided to come over to the mainland and we met in downtown Vancouver for their session.

Austrailia to Aldergrove - Shannon & Clint's Engagement Session, Crescent Beach BC

Shannon had seen me photographing at Jill & Dan's Wedding earlier this summer and contacted me via email. With a shiny ring on her finger and a new title of fiancé she was getting use to using -- we set up a consultation for Shannon & Clint's 2012 Wedding.

Now, I get to hear about plenty of love stories which makes my job incredibly exciting (side note: I should totally write a book about it, and I almost wrote "toats" -- I think webster's dictionary just shuddered). Clint is originally from Australia, and yes ladies he does have that dreamy accent when you think Australian men. I'm pretty sure it's what captivated Shannon! Now, Clint was taken back by this tall blonde beauty, fun-loving girl. Instantly when she was in front of my camera she was flirting with not only Clint but my camera too!

Their Engagement Session was at Crescent Beach and just thinking about how chilly it was makes me shiver. Shannon & Clint were such troopers! During their session like most, I could tell and see genuine love. I have a rule on sessions -- and any of my couples will tell you -- that you absolutely must touch each other for the whole engagement session. It doesn't matter how, you must touch for the whole session. Why? Because simply physical touch like a hug, or holding hands releases oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin and less stress hormones! Hello being more comfortable in front of a camera! Shannon & Clint excelled at this, the way Clint could just get Shannon to glow with a giant smile and make her cheeks flush was so adorable.

Gillian & Jesse - A Langley Engagement Session

It was a night out with friends Gillian with hers, and Jesse with his a simple night out and some drinks. What they never anticipated happening was meeting someone who would forever change their lives. From across the dark room, Jesse spotted Gillian and made his move. Whatever he must of done worked and captured Gillian's attention.

Next month Gillian & Jesse are heading off to beautiful Cancun, Mexico for their destination wedding but prior to heading off we had an awesome engagement session together here in Langley. These two love-birds will be having a 2nd wedding next summer in Langley.

Thanks Giving with No Turkey.

After photographing Rebecca and Evan's Wedding this past Friday we made up a trip up to Verlon's parent's ranch. Now here's the fun part... dun dun dun -- a no turkey thanks giving! Alright, it's not the first one but Verlon & his family are vegetarians thus the no turkey thanks giving, which well for a carnivore such as myself is always odd because for some reason I completely associate Thanks Giving with turkey. But since we've started dating I've started discovering a lot of the health benefits related to going "veggie". Since it was just Thanks Giving weekend -- I'm thankful for so many things but let's not make this an awards "Thank You" speech.

My healthy lifestyle journey started last year in December but really went full-force earlier this year (aka I bought a gym pass and incorporated into a regular routine). I worked on a design project earlier this year for local farmers and the benefits of eating locally which went hand in hand with trying on this healthy lifestyle. What I found was crazy, the scary facts about non-organic vegetables and what it can do to your health along with vegetarian health benefits. The obvious was that most vegetarians have lower BMI's but what I didn't think much about was how they have lower levels of cholesterol, lower blood pressure, less chances of heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, renal disease, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, dementia (Alzheimer's disease) and various other disorders. Isn't that list nuts? If simply eating vegetarian can lower my chances of all of the above, of corse I'm going to make a more health conscious decision to do so! So that's pretty much when I decided my home is a meat-free home, no meat is prepared in the home for 2 reasons - try and eat more healthy meals in the home and 2- preparing raw meat is kinda gross... I guess I'm not a "true" meat eater. Plus no matter how long I'd cook a chicken i'd stress that it had some sort of shade of pink...eww. The only time I'll eat meat is if we go out for dinners or breaky.

Now why the lifestyle change and why I've been hesitant on writing about it?

Well, I thought I would fail --- I thought I would set out on this journey and just give up because it's "too hard". Well, it's not -- it's pure and simple commitment to bettering yourself. My journey hasn't been as extravagant as a lot of other people, but I set the pace that was right for me. This year I've managed to trim down 20 lbs -- and well, it wasn't easy it was just commitment. It wasn't as drastic as I would have loved it to be, but there was quite a few pauses in there with working 14 hour days, 6 days a week, travelling, and various other excuses. Still, I'm proud that at my prime I set up a routine that when life isn't so hectic it's easy to stick to. Monday-Friday, you'll find me doing my workouts at the gym in the morning -- and since this was really the first year, along with my busiest wedding season.... I took a mini hiatus in August. But now that I'm back, I'm feeling great just all round have more energy. Honnestly, the fact that I lost the weight was really awesome and yes, was a part of my initial goal but a lot has changed since the beginning of this year. My new goal is to be "healthy" inside and out.

We go through life so incredibly busy with work, and other commitments we rarely take time for ourselves, to better us where it be mentally or physically -- we forget us. And then we get older, we retire and suddenly we're ill because we've been so busy for so long not paying attention to the day to day things that have affects on our bodies. And here is why I want to be healthy... I want to avoid disease and illness as best I can so I can live a long and healthy life.

Why? Because I grew up with two ill parents. Although what illness' my parents have wasn't necessarily related to poor health choices, being more aware of yourself never hurts. However my mother's disease isn't really about being healthy or not its more genetic predisposition my mom was diagnosed when I was in elementary school with a bone disease called "Ankylosing spondylitis". Because of that it also is related to her having inflammation in her eyes, glaucoma and vision loss. AS is a disease that slowly fuses the spine and has chronic pain. Now here's the lifestyle change and how my mom tries daily to conquer her disease -- she never stops. Seriously, this woman is crazy she is constantly doing something whether it be running around the house cleaning constantly, walking, stair climbing she is like an energizer bunny. Yes sometimes the disease takes her out and she has days where she doesn't want to get up and is in a lot of pain -- but she tries to stay physical. If she doesn't there is a really good chance that the disease will win. My mom is such a fighter she was truly given the short straw in life and I'm sure there are folks that are worse off-- but to me she is such a inspiration. She continues to fight her various illness'. I watched as a child this woman fight and push through all the cards she was dealt health wise. And never really fully understood it all till I grew into an adult how dedicated to healing my mother is. And that is why I want to fight like my mom, fight chances of illness before it's even an issue.

Funny little side note story, I was about 8 or so -- and well any parent knows that elementary schools are a breading ground for these evil things called "lice" oh I think I just got a shiver. Well, the one time I got lice as a kid was when my mom under went eye surgery... I remember coming home from school and giving my mom the yellow paper of doom that the nurse gave me and a few other children after lice checks; while she was in bed healing. I remember her laughing and saying naturally this happens when she just got out of surgery (picture a very heavy portuguese/english accent). So there was my mom when she should have been resting after surgery but she was combing through my 8 year old bug infested head. I'm surprised she just didn't get my dad to buzz cut my hair. Thanks mom. I'm thankful that I have a role model like you. Although I know you won't read this because your still mastering the power button on the computer, maybe I'll show you this sometime.

Aliza's First Birthday, Teddy Bear Theme

Aliza's first birthday happened this past weekend over on the island and well we decided to have some fun with it. It was a small party my immediate family and then my sister-in-law's family which ended up being 14 people plus the little ones on my sister-in-law's side.

My sis (S.I.L - can I do that? refer to her as S.I.L. = sister in law) organized all the food, co-ordinating with both families - my parents hosted the party at their home, and I --- decorated! Heck yes, I went to pink teddy bear heaven and never came back. I knew it was going to be an adult party (other then the 3 little ones including Aliza) so why not have some fun with it. I love dinner parties!! If only I was good at cooking, I see why I didn't manage the food now...

Rebecca & Evan an Engagement Session in New West

Let me begin by saying this is my 2nd wedding with a member of the Jansen Family! Exciting, heck yes! When I first moved to Langley/Vancouver I started attending the Art Institute studying towards my diploma in Graphic Design - by simply asking for a carpool buddy I met a good friend named Lydia (Rebecca's sister). Which then turned into an amazing friend & her family. From late night study sessions - I'm talking till 5 am + sometimes no sleep trying to work through all our projects never simply having enough time to perfect them. Tamara Jansen & Byron Jansen gave up their rec room/barn so we could have somewhere to sleep when working on projects, the office printer, a jetta and much more when I was in college with their daughter. Then watching our lives change out of college seeing my friend getting married and have her two children! From meeting Lydia I had the pleasure to meet her siblings - photographing Lawrence's wedding earlier this year. My first magazine feature! And now, Rebecca's wedding to Evan this October!!

Rebecca and Evan must be meant to be - considering Evan is from out East! I always feel that when someone finds love, and it involves tremendous distance that they were meant to specifically break boundaries and find each other! I'm so very excited to be apart of their wedding day and had an amazing time photographing their engagement session.

Rebecca and I hadn't really been familiar with each other prior to the wedding, she is a busy girl attending Trinity University and Evan is part of the major growing business of Darvonda (the greenhouse). I had always thought this golden haired beauty was shy, well was I ever wrong! The minute I put the camera up she lit up like the sun (fitting right, with her hair?). She posed, she smiled and worked it like a super model. Evan loving held, caressed, and kissed her so sweetly - giving away his excitement that he is excited to spend the rest of his life with Rebecca.

Osoyoo's 2011

I have amazing people in my life. My parents, my brothers, their wives, uncles and aunts, my best friend *cough* shot out to Dayne *cough*, photographer friends, and girlfriends -- and most importantly, last but not least - Verlon. All these individuals have somehow helped me out at one time or another whether it be words of affirmation or the confidence to continue on-ward - everyone has had an impact on my life personally and professionally. Now, Verlon -- he knows exactly what I need sometimes and that means a break from the rush and time to relax. Whether it be simple quality time or an adventure.

This past week Verlon surprised me at home with a beautifully wrapped box from one of my favourite stores with an outfit he had picked out! Such a surprise being that he was whisking me away for the weekend for our yearly, what I thought might have gotten cancelled weekend in Osoyoos! I love wine, no seriously - wine is the entrance fee to my dinner party heart. I'm a big fan of Charlie Don't Surf in Whiterock for a couple of reasons a- their location is stellar across from the ocean b- they have fish n'chips and c- they have See Ya Later - Gerwurtzminer, white wine! Well guess where we went this weekend... See Ya Later Winery!

We stayed at Walnut Beach Resort which was amazing and reminded us of Mexico right on the lake in Osoyoos (felt like I was back in Mexico at the resort in July). We had a Saturday filled with wine tasting at Moon Curser (previously known as Twisted Tree) - one of my absolute favourites, Burrowing Owl, Church & State, Blasted Church (branding, wow awesomeness), See Ya Later, and finally Hester Creek for dinner. Sunday we decided to head up to West Bank and visit Mission Hill and whoa. Was it ever about the experience, what a neat establishment from the location, the look, feel, architecture, and the staff was so incredibly informative. We met Verlon's sister and brother-in-law (Lori & Josh) there and later for Dinner. I picked up a great desert wine "Riesling - Late Harvest" which I'm thinking is going to make some vanilla icecream very happy.

I'm pumped for the week after this great adventure -- next adventure, Aliza's 1st Birthday!

I also remembering hearing stories about my brothers putting drywall mud (my dad is a contractor/construction man) into the wine mixes... Dad = not impressed then!

Daddy, Lightbulb!

There's a video of me as a toddler exclaiming the excitement over my dad changing a lightbulb in the house and flicking the switch. My mom always cracks up about it when it comes up -- my young fascination with my father letting there be light in our home. It came up recently this memory/video and I felt it was fitting and went hand in hand with a recent realization. Much like my father changing a lightbulb that is simply just 'burnt out' we solve our puzzles with the tools and supplies we're given or attain. In my father's case a new light bulb and the knowledge of how to change it. Pretty simple, right.

I cannot make everyone happy. It finally clicked. I have a drive, a dedication, ambition and dream to make everyone happy and feel heart broken when I can't live up to expectations or it just isn't enough. I like to think I give my best, my all and everything to do the very best. And will do anything to turn a rotten feeling around. And I honestly thought until recently it's possible to make everyone happy, I can do it, I can simply fix anything. And of corse whether personal or professional I want to do my best and make sure no body leaves unhappy or feeling rotten/raw. I always come at everything with good intentions and most of the time I can right most concerns. I NEVER want someone to walk away feeling raw. Especially clients, I always hope, pray and try to do everything in my power to make it right. Yes, I'm ridiculously passionate. Hi ho to role models super/wonder woman. And then it happened, it was like a full glass of water crashing onto a marble tile and shattering silently while screaming at me.

IT'S OKAY. Sometimes it cannot be helped. We all mess up (as much as we like to think we're invincible), forget, or worse... how I feel when I let down family. This summer has been so busy that I had to schedule in time to visit with family on the rare occasion when there was time, and I just constantly felt like I was failing them because I couldn't come visit more often without work being involved, whether it was shooting, or on the phone, emailing, meetings etc -- it just didn't stop. And don't get me wrong, I ABSOLUTELY OVER THE MOON LOVE, love, love, love, love...x1000000 what I do. But I also realized the people I am around do too, deserve my attention --- and so begins my technology free weekends or visits with family. A time where I cut out and give my undivided attention to whom I am with.

We aren't here forever, and nether are our loves - the people around us. Which is why in the last year especially I've tried to be more like this (obviously it's hard) but to live life knowing that we are not permanent and cherish the little things and not getting caught up in things you simply cannot control. For example; I cannot control the weather. Especially here in the Lower mainland, so I mostly bank on it raining and if it's a gorgeous sunny day -- hey, bonus! But I work around, I try my best given every circumstance to make it work and I do. But that scenario very much plays into life and how we handle curve balls like illness, or little life roadblocks - we simply make it work and do our very best to move forward in the most positive way possible and solve what ever puzzles we can with the pieces we're given.

Christina & Chris' Burnaby Village Engagement

Christina aka Chrissy and Chris - wild right? Not only do their names go together so do they! Christina found me via a friend who had hired me for a trash the dress session (Krista, the Bride that got into the pond at Campbell Valley Park - Go Krista!) Christina started planning her dream wedding earlier this year, for next April and I was chosen to be apart of it.

We photographed their Engagement Session earlier, but with the splurge of last minute couples engagement sessions prior to weddings, I hadn't had a chance to post their session online - then debated to post it prior to their wedding early next year. But how could I resist posting it when there's a mery-go-round!

Sometimes you just know...

Sometimes you just know when you meet the right person suddenly all those doubts, fears and anxieties no longer exist only excitement towards planning a future together. This was the case right from the start with Danae & Clif. Passion isn't enough to describe the aura these two have encircling them. They both ironically had met at a wedding last year and instantly knew from the start that they were each other's match.

With their engagement photo session we started on a rainy/cloudy summer (yes, I just said summer!) day on Granville Island, with the day quickly turning to rain -- a 2nd session was set up for another day at the beach in Whiterock as that was rather important to the couple.

Jillian & Daniel's August summer wedding had the most amazing weather! Thank you August for showing up! The day started off at Jill's parent's home in Langley and the Wedding buzz was in the air! In the home hallway a chalkboard with " wedding day today"was written on it. Post it's were scattered all over windows as a reminder of wedding to do's and upstairs hanging in the master bedroom where Jill was getting ready was hanging her beautiful lace gown. She look so incredibly elegant in her dress and matching veil. And Daniel was Prince Charming in his suit from Moores.

Jill and Dan had a summer church wedding and opted for the first look - the first time they saw each other was when Dan was waiting for her outside her parent's home. From there we went to photograph at a local Lavender Farm followed by their Ceremony & Reception at their home church in Aldergrove.

The way these two were was incredible, the way he would look at her, the way she would look back at him. You just could feel it that this was meant to be. At one point Dan while photographing was speaking just to Jill (yes, I totally eavesdropped on this) telling her she look beautiful and that it wasn't fate alone that had brought them together but something much more - now that while I was photographing was hard to not get a little misty eyed! And Yes I completely agree, God simply must have had a roll in placing you in each other's lives!

Princesses all find their Prince Charmings and I feel so lucky that every weekend I'm always watching real life fairy tales.

How they didn't cross paths earlier on in life is a little bit of a mystery. Bobbi & Scott both grew up in a small Vancouver Island town - Duncan. Later on in life making the trek down to Victoria and eventually crossing paths online! Yup, that's right - they met online! After realizing how much they had in common and the "click" of realizing this could work - years went by and August 6th - they celebrated their Wedding Day in Duncan at Zanatta Winery.

A beautiful hill-top setting tucked off the beaten path, views of vineyards, and a heritage feeling all over the property. It was a beautiful venue for an amazing couple.

Vanessa and I actually went to high school together way back when in Victoria. We went to tiny little St. Andrew's High School and both started on our epic journeys afterwards. Vanessa went to UVIC and at some point in there met this handsome fellow named Ryan. Now Ryan must have swept Vanessa off her feet because it was love, and it blossomed for well, years. Then Prince Charming (a.k.a. Ryan) asked his Princess (Vanessa) for her hand in marriage.

Bobbi & Scott | Engagement Photos at Royal Roads Victoria BC Wedding Photographer

I always ask the same question - How did you meet? And well, Bobbi and Scott most definitely were meant to be. Of all the places in the world, of all the ways to meet - they met online. With the online world flooded with people, they were meant to connect (heh)! We had a fun engagement session at Royal Roads University grounds in Victoria BC, and soaked up the sunlight on Canada Day. If you are familiar with the movie 'x-men' this was the school for 'gifted children' from the movie. Also a fairy tale castle for any princess which seemed suiting for Bobbi and Scott.

We walked around the grounds and gardens enjoying the day, and finally went out to the docks/rowing yard on the Ocean water. Bobbi and Scott thought it would be fun to blow bubbles on the dock which led to some really fun photos.

Adrienne & Nathan's Sneak PeakWedding | Victoria, BC Wedding Photographer

They said their vows on the beautiful back terrace garden overlooking the Esquimalt ocean innlet in Victoria BC on July 2, 2011. More photos to come from that beautiful day, but for now a sneak peak! I had always wondered what a real life Cinderella would look like and I'm pretty sure it would be Adrienne! Adrienne and Nathan are one of the sweetest couples I had ever met, I felt truly blessed to be apart of their wedding day. I had this feeling as if I already knew them both were so much longer and beyond being their wedding photographer. Adrienne and Nathan even manage to make me shed a tear at the end of the night when she said she was so happy to have myself and Dayne there to capture the day!

The way these two were together was so intoxicating to watch (and obviously photograph). The way Nathan looked at Adrienne, and the way she would touch or kiss him back said it all without words. Yet again the never ending proof that True-Love does exist. I felt like I was watching a fairytale unfold with these two the whole day. And I know if Adrienne's reading this she's probably having a little laugh because of a few 'bumps' in the road that switched up the day - but those now are funny, unique memories and apart of the story. I couldn't sleep the whole night, full of excitement and a little nervous. I was excited at all the possibilities and what the photos would be like, how the weather would be -- what could I do to be more creative. Those were the feelings I had when I photographed the very first wedding by myself -- and felt more recently the night before my brother Ric & his fiance Nicky's engagement photo session. I never thought I'd be photographing my brother's engagement photos nor a wedding! It's such an honour and that I was asked to take their photos.

A while back I had a chance to photograph them in Victoria, and I'm not going to lie -- the nervous side of me showed up, along with some pressure. They did fantastic on their photo session -- and I got to see a new side of the two of them. Because I live on the mainland I find I do miss out on opportunities to hangout with family 1v1 so it was really nice to be able to just see them, close and passionate for their engagement photos.

Today is our first day in Mexico, and I thought it would be fitting to post their engagement photo session on the blog. Congrats Ric & Nicky! I'm so excited for you both, and I had a new sister now!

Jill & Dan | Langley, and Whiterock Engagement Photography

Jill and Dan contacted me after I photographed Erin & Lawrence's Green house wedding (as featured in Real Weddings Vancouver magazine). Erin's sister Lainey is friend's with Jill's sister Stephanie and so we decided to get together and all the planning went ahead. I had the pleasure of photographing these two last month in Langley and Whiterock.

These photos are definitely a tribute to vintage style, as I called Jill a couple hours before the session "Hey, I've got an idea - are you in?" and I got the go ahead, and so I strapped Martha Stewart's paper flowers to this giant tree in the Langley Park, laid out a blanket and so began our session and various accessories (Michaels for the wand "You Amaze Me"). Jill & Dan were such good sports about trying it out, and I completely fed off the energy they were giving. I can tell these two are in love. After giving the go ahead for location two - the Whiterock Library, we set up a more formal session there.

Here are a few of my absolute favourites from this session. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep going with the vintage approach, but I feel it worked out great for this styled session.

Friday - Date Night!

It's Friday, the day before. Lots of prepping happens today - from double checking all my gear, cleaning and various other fun photographer to do's. But after everything is packed away and ready for tomorrow's Wedding. My dress for tomorrow is neatly placed beside the bed, with my shoes. Somewhere in there is a call to Dayne to make sure he's ironed his shirt (he's going to get me for this lol). After everything is ready, then it's onto my Friday night date night with Verlon!

We like to keep a habit of a weekly date night, where we a - go for dinner, b - get take out (oh such rebels!), c - watch a movie at home or at the theatre. Last Friday we went for dinner at Browns in Langley, it's like a cactus club knock-off with better food I guess. But this week was different, we watched the sunset earlier in the week at Crescent Beach, the other night I wanted to do another walk-about at Rocky Point Park for tomorrow's wedding (i love adventuring with Ver). So tonight, it's movie night! When we're together I feel that all the mundane things are so much more "exciting" together. I feel like I sound like a school-girl talking about her crush. I'm sure if he was reading this he'd probably say something along the lines of "hunny, this is why I didn't want to date you when you were 16" or something like that heh (we didn't start dating till later). Having him around knowing that he's been around and seen me grow and change from that awkward teenage (c'mon we all were there once) to an adult now makes me feel like he understands me, my dreams, and my goals. He doesn't mind when I pull away for a minute or hour if I need to take a call and talk to a bride. Or if I'd like to get ahead on editing.

But until then today will be filled with LOTS of replying to emails (yay, for happy new brides! holla!) and editing. You know your in Wedding Season when all you want to do is stay close to the computer and edit all these new pictures!

Personal - Home Movie

It's finally Summer!

Today marks the official first day of summer, and today's weather was really a witness to that, I was just wishing I had a shoot today! I've been shooting so much recently it's been amazing - I feel so blessed (I feel like I'm overplaying that sentence). This year has been a year of tremendous growth, learning and so much reward. 5 years ago if you were to ask me where I'd be -- I truly never imagined here. Life has taken me where I feel I truly belong, and I've never been so in love with photography as I am right now.

There's something I can't explain about being behind a camera and seeing other individuals shine in front of it. I'm often so amazed at how comfortable they are in front of my lens. Recently a lot of the shoots I've been doing have been engagement photos or weddings and each one feels so incredibly different. Obviously the couples all make it very different, but the experience and "feeling" is so different - it's like watching romantic movies every week. I feel pretty lucky that way -- I get to watch a romantic movie of stills with each session.

Before a wedding there is a lot of prep - the obvious; consultations with couples, getting to know them, their engagement sessions, and then all the other details (organizing locations, gear etc)... My personal way to get ready for a wedding shoot the couple days before is to listen to all things wedding music related... yes that's right Brides, I also get the jitters for your wedding! No, not nervous to photograph - just so excited to be apart of the day, I get in the moment with the music. "Going to the Chapel, and we're gonna get married..." (Going To The Chapel Of Love- The Dixie Cups). Classic - but there's better... Glee - "Marry Me" - really does get that ewwy gooey feeling going for weddings. Maybe I'm a sap but I love it.

In May before heading off to Cuba, I had the pleasure to photograph two beautiful women Debbi & LB (Linda-Beth). I had the honour of photographing their Wedding. It was an intimate Wedding with friends and family at Muse Winery in Victoria, B.C. (what an awesome location! on the inner inlet - not to mention the wine was delicious!). Debbi & LB found me while they were at home in U.A.E! We hadn't met before, and most of our conversing was via email prior to their arrival in Canada. I had such an amazing time photographing their wedding, and being apart of their day -- meeting all their friends & family and hearing about their lives pre & with each other at the reception during the speeches. As a photographer you really get to know your couple even on the day of! I wish them nothing but the best - and I hope one day I'll see you again in Canada!!!

Wedding Photography Session || Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal

It was a little after 7pm when we started the formal photography of Pilar & Pedro in Vila Franca, Sao Miguel, Azores (Acores, to us Portuguese folk - did I just make myself sound old?). The sky was golden and painted like a heaven with glowing golds, blues, oranges and pinks. I felt like I was viewing one of Michaelangelo's paintings but it surrounded me.

I feel so blessed to witness 'True Love' - moments that a couple has in front of my camera where you feel like your taking part in a movie, a movie of their lives. I'm not intentionally trying to sound like a saap, it's truly how I feel. That moment when I'm behind the camera and the couple is totally and completely in their own space - that they almost forget I'm there.

Canucks in Portugal

This is the last week and a bit here in Portugal -- I started this trip if you read my blog post with the goal of learning more about my family, and here we go - I'm going to share some of my finds! These photos are so cool for me, for multiple reasons -- one they're vintage and original, and C'mon their photos - I'm a photographer but more so it's my family! This image is incredible precious to me, and i'm saddened that its slightly ruined. My grandfather and grandmother's faces are the only faces that are not ruined. I wish I knew of a way to fix this image.

It's crazy to think when I leave here it's going to be life as usual (although I've stilled work while being here). I think the oddest part is going back to my home where it will be quiet again. Everyday I've been here I've had loads of family surrounding me! All my aunts and uncles and cousins visiting every night in my grandmother's home, sitting in the family room conversing into the late hours of the night, and talking about old stories. I can't wait to get back and write everything I've learned down. I still feel like I haven't had enough time here, or done enough with family. But it makes me hopeful only to justify another trip, sooner than how long it took me to get here. It had been at least 6 years ago since I was last here. I'm already planning a future trip next year or the next. I want to always maintain roots with my family and where they come from. Anyway, I'll be back in Canada soon! And I'm bringing back goodies(cakes also known as Quesadas da Vila).

Blogging from the middle of the Atlantic!

Writing you from the middle of the atlantic tonight - it's 9pm here and in the midst of the worst storm since I've gotten here. It's rainy and windy so much so that you can hear it inside the house. I am currently staying with my grandmother (in portuguese: "Avo" sounds like Ah-Vo) and my aunt and uncle who live with her. It's been a good/bittersweet trip since I've been here. It's been great to be here with family I haven't seen for years, but difficult. It's hard to see my Avo in pain and seeing her age on her face. The last time I was here, her age did not catch up with her - this time you can tell that she has lived life (she's looking great never the less). It's also hard in the fact that I'm pretty sure her short-term memory from day-to-day is going. I find myself repeating things everyday that she has already asked me.

So far I've been given a few pearls of wisdom, mostly regarding marriage and men. "Make sure you find a good man, who will always appreciate you - and when you find him, marry him! Make sure he works hard, and believes in God!" - Avo Rita. I'm not going to lie, her pearls of wisdom are great - and I completely agree (with a few additions of qualities).

I came for a sole reason - to see her, and ask her questions. She doesn't remember a lot of things now, and I find her struggling to answer my questions about the old days. It's been helpful though being here, because my one aunt remembers everything. Today I managed to film my grandmother, mother, and my aunt (secretly mwuaha camera on the table, sneaky) -- all singing child hood songs - songs that my mother now sings to Aliza (my niece). I'm filling up a legacy book with questions and answers from this trip but sometimes I blank on what questions I could ask -- I'd love for YOU to tell me what you wish or are glad that you have asked your grandparents about?

While walking throughout the village, it's currently Lent and I had the pleasure of seeing the Romeiros. 20-40 men singing "Ave Maria" down the street give away to the romeiros (pilgrims) of the island of Sao Miguel coming up the street. The bright colors of their scarfs, which symbolize Christ's crown of thorns.On their backs, they have food in hand-made back packs, covered by hand homespun woolen shawls. They look like hunchback as they walk by. They carry this as a sacrifice much like Christ carried the cross and is only taken off when they stop on the side of the road to eat. The shawls represent Christ's royal tunic.

In 1522 there was a terrible earthquake that completely levelled the village my family is from (Vila Franca do Campo) killing most of the towns residents. This religious practice of walking the entire island since the disaster is a pilgrimage of prayer. Each Saturday during lent, for a week - groups of men walk the island. They pray the Rosaries, and Ave Maria the whole walk around the island. They stop at all the churches and chapels praying at each, more than 100. The men each take a wooden staff, representing Christ's scepter. When it comes to night time, these men take shelter in the villages they get to at night and the community takes them in and shelters them and feeds them.

I had the pleasure of going to a mass for the Romeiros, and it was so lively and full of faith. The tiny stone church was jam packed shoulder to shoulder of villagers and family members of the men. My cousin Nelia, her brother Jose was one of the many men making the pilgrimage. The mass was so emotional, that it was hard to hold tears back from the faith that was felt in one room. There was one song that stuck out more than the others in the mass:

This is the church called "Matrez" in Villa Franca, this is where my grandparents were married and my parents. One day I would like to say my vows in this church.

The whole point in this blog is so you can get to know me besides the obvious - I am a photographer. But I have other thoughts and feelings and I really wanted to share this. They say never post "bad" or "not uplifting" topics on a "business" blog. So I wasn't sure and gave it time to think about whether or not I wanted to post about the devastating scene in Japan right now. I noticed that none of the photographer's that I follow had wrote anything, it was just business as usual... well it isn't. My heart is saddened, there is so much grief to the East. And the fact that we are on a major fault line here in BC, and could have very well been in the same scene makes my heart go out to them even more so.

Japan was hit with a 9.0 magnitude earthquake just off the coast, then causing a Tsunami to hit the coastline -- which then lead to a N-Emergency, a Nuclear Emergency - a possible melt down. Earlier that week China was hit heavily with an earthquake, weeks before New Zealand and the list goes on. With the spot-light on Japan as their situation is so terribly bad. I pray that the scientist and researchers in Japan are given strength and knowledge on how to tackle this nuclear crisis. I pray for the victims and families that are effected, may their love ones be found, may the injured find help, and those trapped in the debris be rescued. I hope that the search and rescue teams have the strength they need to work the endless hours they are putting in to help. That food,water and various other supplies get to Japan asap. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Give the individuals working to cool the reactors, or working in the danger zone strength - they are making the largest sacrifice - thank you. My prayers go to you, and your families, thank you for being so courageous.

I read the paper this morning as I usual do, and found that BC now wants to practice its earthquake preparedness and tsunami awareness, by practicing on March 23 - I won't be in BC then, but I am impressed by officials for making attempts to up our preparedness for possible natural disasters. They realized through the tragedy in Japan that we are not prepared as efficiently as Japan - which says a lot.

I just felt I had to write today about Japan. We find ourselves so consumed in our busy lives, and are constantly bombarded by tragedies all over the world by TV, or internet - that we can find ourselves numb. Do not feel helpless, you can help in various ways whether that be donating to a non-profit organization (if you would like to know my favourites send me a message), or keep them in your thoughts or prayers.

Last week I was given some devastating news - my grandmother was seriously ill. She had been in the hospital and her condition was worsenening. Panic hit me, and I just knew I had to be there - yesterday. The whole mentality that I may never see/speak to her again hit me hard and scared me. I planned a flight the following day to leave March 18th. I was a wreck, and couldn't process anything. All I knew is I was wasting time being here and not there.

Everything raced through my mind on the questions I wished I could ask, all the things I'm still so curious about - and I worried, worried I would miss out. I started writing, furiously a list of things I wish I could ask if given the chance. And then came the "chance". Her condition is now stable, with her usual concerns. I realized though I couldn't pass up the opportunity to possibly see her for the last time - not necessiarly that her condition will worsen - but more so the last time I could go to Portugal was 5 years ago. I'm leaving next week and I'm ready to be present in the moment with my family and ask all the questions -- and make sure there is absolutely no regrets. And the best way to prepare is to be present and in the moment. If you'd like to email me just be patient with responses. I'm excited to share my journey with you all.
