Tea time at the Empress - Fairmont Empress Victoria BC

It's a Sunday, a day for pretty dresses, church and family. My mother always dressed me in these dresses that made me look like a little pastry. Colours of pinks, purples and blues with floral designs all over them. My favourite dresses however were always white to my mother's dismay - she dreaded washing white clothing from a child. We would get out from church and hop in our car and drive home and have family Brunch after church. Sunday was our lazy family day. And on good days (when my parent's were feeling okay) we would go for a 'passeio' (Portuguese for "outing") which meant we would go for a drive in downtown Victoria past the harbour front. If I was 'good' that usually meant a stop at dairy queen for some ice cream afterwards.

I loved our Sunday 'passeio' they were my favourite part of being out with my parents - just driving around in the family car. Not much has changed. I still love driving in the car, and exploring. I love getting in the car and seeing where we end up. Verlon and I constantly take drives out into the valley to explore or down in Washington. Sometimes I feel like I was meant to be a dog, and stick my head out the window since I'm always just so excited to go for "car rides". Yikes, my future kids are totally going to only get to sleep by riding in the car!

I always remembered when we would go for our drives downtown looking at the Empress and wanting to go for Tea so badly, or to even stay at the Empress. Well, at this point I have done both. And I finally had a chance to get my mother to go with me for Tea at the Empress before my birthday. These photos below are from our trip to the Empress and tea time. I'm such a sucker for nice tea porcelain!

This past weekend I was working on the island and had a lovely Wedding and Engagement sessions. - Today my mother and I went for a car drive out to Sooke and had ice tea's on a patio at a special spot on the island. I was glad to make up for my absence yesterday to hang out with her today. Even though she drives me crazy sometimes with mothering (too much love!) I appreciate and value her so much. Love you mom!

One Shot Teaser - Danielle & Stephen

Just one shot from their session yesterday! I had the chance to go through them - hoping to post more teasers asap!

A Seattle Birthday Trip - places to visit in Seattle

The week before last was my birthday and Verlon and I decided to go to Seattle for a quick trip on my birthday. With the car loaded with our over-night bags, plastic champagne glasses and passport we headed towards the border. A two hour border wait may have interrupted our night but having one on one time with each other doesn't matter where it is, as along as we're together. You learn to appreciate moments where there are no interruptions so much more as you get older... (hah, cheesy since I'm now one year older).

We stopped off at the Cheese Cake Factory for my slice of cake with candle, then followed up with playing games at GameWorks. I personally love the carnival style games, or penny fall games. We proudly walked away with 1000 tickets and took home the prizes of candy, my sweet tooth was content.

In the morning we followed up our amazing adventure to Crepe de France in Pike Place Market. An absolute must if your visiting Seattle. I LOVE CREPES! Okay, well, I also love anything Parisian. I feel like I was secretly meant to live between the Eiffel tower & the canals of Venice. We wandered the market taking in all the small shops on the many floors. This is my 3rd venture to Seattle and I always feel like I never see enough. I love Seattle and I hope sometime that I will be able to photograph a wedding there (yay visas!)! It's fabulous and totally reminds me of Victoria.

Vancouver Family Photographer | Robyn, Mike & Brady

One of the biggest events of your life is getting married and one of the most precious moments of life is when you have a child. And as much as I don't like to say it, I hear it from everyone - there's something special about your first child (I'm the youngest). For as much as they are finding out new things, so are you as a parent. Seeing the way Robyn & Mike were with Brady makes me really excited to be a parent one day (God willing).

We had been scheduling this session since January - can you believe it? We finally lucked out with the perfect weather and timed out session around light & tide times in Whiterock. The best part of being a lifestyle photographer is we can really just have fun & play. Children are not meant to sit still and pose for an hour or longer - so I take a different approach. Let's play and if the opportunity arises where we can get some cute poses in there - I POUNCE ON IT!

Brady was exceptionally amazing, I'm giving full credit to Robyn & Mike's relaxed approach with him - that's totally how I'd like to be one day with kids. We had a good time walking around the pier, beach and enjoyed the sunshine. Family sessions are a fun time to just bond with you and your spouse but also your kids! Children grow up quickly and having the photos to document those changes is important.

I was lucky enough to come along when my dad invested in a great canon film slr, but my siblings weren't so lucky, they have a handful of photographs of them of children, and I constantly hear from them how they wished there was more - even just simple videos. Parents, take videos of your kids - you have phones, do it!

If your a parent looking to take better photos of your child depending on age, give them something to do. Some of my favourite shots of Brady are when he is playing in the sand around him - it's all new, this was his first time in the sand.  If your child is a bit older and can walk/run - get them to run back and forth between you (with your camera) and tag a nearby tree. The kids get excited, and you get some cute photos of them coming straight towards you!
